One of the greatest captains in Real Oviedo’s history, Juan Manuel, was honoured during the halftime interval in yesterday’s match, as a mark of appreciation for his long career with ‘Los Carbayones’ (16 years as a player).
Real Oviedo’s Club President, Jorge Menéndez Vallina, presented the former defender with a commemorative picture, depicting one of his many appearances in regional derbies during his sporting career.
Juan Manuel Fernández González (born in Orillés, Aller in 1940) joined Real Oviedo Vetusta in 1960, where he spent three seasons, before being promoted into the first team squad, where he would wear the blue shirt until his retirement in 1976.
He represented his country’s Aficionados (amateur) side on six occasions, including taking part in the European Championship in 1966.
