Real Oviedo full-back Lucas Ahijado appeared before the media this Friday during his visit to the Campus Salus Real Oviedo, after his contract was officially renewed with the club until June 2026.
The local lad began by expressing his feelings after the announcement of his contract renewal: "I'm very happy, I'm really looking forward to getting started again. It's the opportunity that every little boy dreams of. It wasn't the most expected, it was difficult, but I have to thank the club and the Gaffer. Now I have to work to give back to them for this opportunity."
When asked what it means for him to play for Real Oviedo in the First Division, Lucas admits that, "I've dreamt about it many times. Everyone wanted Real Oviedo to be in the First Division, now it has happened and I've been given the opportunity to continue with the team I love. It's a dream. I want to enjoy it and give my best."
As for the continuity of other homegrown players on the Real Oviedo first team, the full-back said "I don't know how Álex Cardero's contract is going. He has been playing with us and we are happy with him. Let's hope that Santi's contract goes ahead, he brings a lot, he's very important for us. We have to enjoy it and continue forward. Also, I think it's important for the team to have players who have managed to get from Second B to First Division, and the more people who’ve done that there are, the better. I was able to experience it myself and I'm proud of it."
In regards to the first home game in the First Division being against Real Madrid, Lucas pointed out that "it's going to be a very beautiful and special match because it's the first game at Carlos Tartiere. The fans deserve it, and so do we." In addition, as for what he expects from the team in the beginning of this new phase, the defender believes that “ since we just got promoted we have to get as many points as possible.”
Finally, when asked about the influence of Paunovic on his renewal, Lucas Ahijado said "he is very important, without him I wouldn't be here. He bet on me and now I have to give my best to try to give back to him for this opportunity", he declared.
