On a day like today, October 27, in the year 1957, Real Oviedo climbed to the top spot in the Second Division standings after defeating Real Racing Club in Santander, which had entered that matchday as the leader.
It was the seventh matchday of the 1957-58 Second Division National League Championship. Real Oviedo faced Real Racing Club de Santander at the Campos de Sport de El Sardinero. To approach the match, Real Oviedo's coach, Abel Picabea, arranged the following lineup: Caldentey, Toni, Alarcón, Marigil, Sánchez, Ferrer, Xirau, Durán, Aloy, Lalo, Artabe.
Real Oviedo's superiority was evident from the very first minutes of the match. As a result, the halftime score was 0-3, with goals from Artabe, Aloy, and Xirau. In the second half, Racing was the first team to score, but the local team's reaction did not amount to much more. Real Oviedo scored two more goals, through Artabe and Ferrer. The match ended with a resounding 1-5 result, which placed the Asturian team at the top of the standings, displacing the Santander team.
At the end of the season, Real Oviedo would maintain that position, finishing first in the Second Division, which earned them promotion to the First Division. In the photo illustrating this text, from left to right, are Xirau, Cuervo, Artabe, Ferrer, and Aloy.
