Julián Calero: "The boys have not given up at any moment"

The blue coach highlights the team's reaction to rescue a point against Almería, values the competitive ability of his players, and emphasizes the collective effort and the contribution of the players who came off the bench.

The coach of Real Oviedo, Julián Calero, spoke after his team's draw at the UD Almería Stadium with a mix of satisfaction for the team's reaction and ambition for the result. The blue coach highlighted his team's character in coming back from 2-0, maintaining faith until the end, and delivering a high-level second half against one of the most challenging opponents in the league.

Calero focused on the team's response after halftime and their ability not to give up when the score was against them: "The way the game was going and the dynamic after the 2-2 is positive. I think we played an extraordinary second half, without losing faith and keeping at it. In the first half, honestly, I told them we didn’t even know what we had done wrong to be losing 2-0."

The blue coach also highlighted the footballing arguments Oviedo found to compete and seek a comeback, with chances, saves by the opposing goalkeeper, and offensive presence: "Obviously, we weren’t solid in the two goals... but a crossbar, two or three saves by Andrés, and possession against an Almería team that plays like that… it’s something to be satisfied and happy about, but I like to win, and playing like this, the normal thing is to win. That said, being 2-0 down against Almería in the 87th minute, the normal thing is to lose, and we managed to draw."

Calero also wanted to highlight the attitude of the entire squad and the conviction the team maintained even in the most difficult moments: "We have to keep discovering ourselves. I already said we were like a box of chocolates, and we’re still being discovered. Competitively, we’ve been very good, and we have to congratulate everyone, the starters and those who came on later. The boys didn’t give up at any moment, and life is about this, getting up when you fall and not losing faith."

The coach emphasized that the team never stopped believing in their abilities and explained the risks they took to try to change the course of the match: "There wasn’t a single player who dropped their head; if we had done that, they would have scored five against us. We went to press them high, taking risks in transitions and staying alert in our coverage. We did it, and if we had scored earlier..."

When asked about the delayed flight, Calero dismissed any impact it might have had on the team's performance: "The flight delay didn’t affect anything. We had everything very well organized to arrive in advance, we decided that the players should rest in their own beds, and that’s why we took a charter flight. We arrived with plenty of time, and there’s no excuse."

Regarding the value of the draw, the coach acknowledged that he always prefers to take all three points, although he considered Real Oviedo's response against a strong opponent to be important: "It’s always better to win. It’s true that, at the leader’s home, in this form, and with everything going their way, including today. It’s no coincidence; they are well-coached and have a great squad, so the point is very important, and it shows that we are capable of competing well."

Finally, Calero highlighted the recovery of Jacobo, whom he saw once again close to the level that led the club to bet on him last summer. The coach recalled his goal-scoring stats and the importance he could have in upcoming matches.

"Today we got Jacobo back; today the player we signed in the summer returned. He has very important goal-scoring stats, and this is the player we brought in for these moments, and we have to value him," he concluded.
