Football was unkind to Real Oviedo in their final match of the year. Los Azules, who had several men missing from their usual starting eleven, were behind on the scoresheet from early on and were unable to quite recover from the early deficit.

Córdoba opened the scoring from their first attack on Juan Carlos’ goal. Real Oviedo had previously come close from a free kick and from an effort from Pereira, denied by the opposition defence in both cases, when Córdoba took the lead in the 20th minute. Javi Galán headed home a cross from the right wing at the back post. There was still a great deal of time remaining in the encounter, and Real Oviedo went in search of the equaliser. The Andalucian side’s rearguard denied Pereira the chance to shoot following a fine pass from Toché. This was followed by fine defending by Kieszek to prevent Jon Erice from a dead ball situation, resulting in a corner.

Real Oviedo didn’t even have chance to launch an attack on Córdoba’s defence after the break before they had fallen further behind. A harmless shot from outside the area deflected off an Real Oviedo player, diverting into the back of Juan Carlos’ net. Real Oviedo reacted quickly, despite injuries to Óscar Gil and Toché, forcing Fernando Hierro into changes. Susaeta came closest for the home side, but his direct free kick hit Kieszek’s left upright. With Real Oviedo surging forward in attack, Córdoba were limited to defending balls into the box which couldn’t quite find their target. Real Oviedo were up against both Córdoba and the pitch, which on various occasions caused players to slip and miscontrol in attack. Jorge had a shot from within the area, but it was saved by the opposition goalkeeper, and David Rocha hit the post with a low effort from the edge of the area. Finally, Linares cut the lead to 2-1 in the 88th minute, but unfortunately it was merely a consolation, despite the vociferous support from the crowd in El Tartiere.

This was a bitter defeat leading into the Winter Break. The team will recommence training on Monday 26th at 16:00.
