Toché met Linares’ flick on to score the only goal and give Oviedo the victory against a Real Valladolid side who couldn’t find a way past the defence nor Juan Carlos

Real Oviedo managed to secure a second consecutive home win, and consequently six points from the past two games, in front of more than 1,000 away fans from Valladolid. Real Oviedo triumphed over one of their direct rivals in the table thanks to Toché’s first half strike. The away side was forced to push forward in search of the equaliser but found themselves up against a fine defensive performance from Real Oviedo, including several saves from Juan Carlos.

With the same starting eleven that took to the field against Elche, Saúl Berjón fired the first warning shot, with a long-range effort attempting to catch Pau Torres out. Next Lucas Torró had a headed opportunity from Jon Erice’s free kick, but was denied by the opposition defence. In the fourteenth minute of the clash however, Toché found himself bearing down on goal and one-on-one with Pau Torres following Linares’ flicked header. The forward fired into the bottom right corner, grabbing the first, and ultimately only, goal of the game. The deteriorating pitch affected the match, and Real Valladolid responded to the goal by launching a couple of lightening attacks which were denied only by the offside flag. Juan Carlos made a fine save to deny Jordan. Real Oviedo hit back with a fine Susaeta cross which the defence just got to ahead of Linares in the final chance before the break. As the half drew to a close Valladolid were applying serious pressure.

In the second half, and with changes made by Fernando Hierro, Real Oviedo were strong defensively and had chances to increase their lead. A lovely cross from José Fernández found the feet of Linares, but good anticipation from Real Valladolid’s defence saw the move peter out into a corner. Juan Carlos denied a weak, low shot from Michel, and Pau Torres kept out Toché’s close-range effort. An injury to Jon Erice resulted in the introduction of Rocha in his place in central midfield, and led to greater pressure from the away side. Juan Carlos again had to be alert to save Mata’s effort, who was then substituted. The home crowd pushed their team on in the final minutes, and the final opportunity fell to Susaeta, whose individual ran ended when he fired wide under pressure from the opposition centre backs.

This victory in the Carlos Tartiere further reinforced Real Oviedo’s confidence in their home matches, before they begin preparing the trip to Almería next Sunday (18:00).
