The club's second team, which has officially been known as Real Oviedo B in recent times, has now reclaimed the name of Real Oviedo Vetusta. This move sees the side return to the traditional name which it used for decades, and is the name by which all Oviedistas know it.
The Spanish Football Association has now approved the club's second team "becoming known as Real Oviedo Vetusta instead of Real Oviedo B". This process was initiated upon the request of the club's Board of Directors, and took the form of an administrative application.
Vetusta is a team with a lot of history. It was founded on 16th April 1926 with the name Sportiva Foot-Ball Club. Shortly afterwards, on 24th April 1926, Sportiva's first directors' meeting was held, with Manuel Martínez being named Club President.
The team changed name on 1st February 1941, when it started to be known as Sociedad Deportiva Vetusta. It became an affiliate to Real Oviedo during the 1943-44 season. In August 1977 the name changed once more, this time to Real Oviedo Aficionado, before becoming Sociedad Deportiva Vetusta once more in the 1989-90 season. Two years later it became Real Oviedo B. The team disappeared in 2003, due to the club's financial problems, before returning to competition during the 2006-07 season.
Independently of its official name, the team has always been known affectionately as Vetusta by Oviedistas, and it is a name which is intimately linked to the city of Oviedo. The name Vetusta evokes memories of our city appearing in the timeless novel 'La Regenta'. It also reminds of us of the stadium used by Real Stadium, one of the two Oviedo clubs which merged together to create Real Oviedo.
For all of these reasons, and because it was the desire of many Oviedistas, our affiliate team will officially be known as Real Oviedo Vetusta from now on.
