Real Oviedo President Jorge Menéndez Vallina, accompanied by the rest of the Board of Directors, César Martín, Joaquín del Olmo and Michu, today appeared in a press conference. They were also joined by Head Coach Javi Rozada and the club captains.
The President began by explaining that "we are aware that it's the worst on-field start to a season in Real Oviedo's history. We are very concerned and truly aware of the responsibility. We are looking for solutions.
Arturo (Elías) is worried; we are constantly talking to him. The responsibility is huge. We have made everything the team could possibly need available to them. We believe it's important that the team feels that
backing. We have to get out of this situation. We are all united. We are asking the fans to be on our side, and that they keep going as they have up until now. We are all united and we are going to get through this. We
want to express our concern and say that Arturo always has an eye on it. We want to show our faces, so that everyone can see us and know that we are going to fight to get through this."
Responding to a question about the causes which have led to matters reaching this point, the President explained that "the first thing we've done is to change the Head Coach. We have made mistakes, and the technical
department knows what they are."
Joaquín del Olmo gave an analysis of the early days of Javi Rozada's time in charge, saying "we are happy with Javi. It's been an interesting change. Hopefully we will get to see a team perform at the same tempo for
the full 90 minutes."
Asked once more about the causes, Joaquín explained that "it's a worrying situation. I believe that we have a good squad. This year we have finally achieved a good mixture of experience and academy products. The reality is that we have picked up two points. Arturo is fully aware of the situation. I think we have been denied more points by minor details. We have to analyse things and not look for excuses. We have a very capable
coaching staff and we are strengthening the other areas of the club so that we can take that step forward that we are lacking."
With respect to whether he felt there had or had not been mistakes in the planning, given the change in coach, Del Olmo reasoned that "at the end of the day, people always see changes as being about coaches. I believe that we have important, experienced players and academy players. It's clear that there is a problem, but also that the feelings around the last two matches have been different. We have to take it a game at a time and try
to win the next one. We have to be competitive for each of the ninety minutes. And get the win. We need a victory, and nobody is going to gift us anything."
Asked whether it's the worst period for Grupo Carso since their arrival at Real Oviedo, Joaquín del Olmo answered "without any doubt. We were very excited when the season started. After the match in Coruña I wouldn't have believed that we would be like this today. There are small details that we haven't been able to sort out. We can't keep going over it, but we have to be concerned and look for solutions."
With respect to the chants calling for his resignation during the last home match, Del Olmo said that "it's not pleasant, but I understand the fans' anger at seeing their team in the situation it is in. I have always shown
my face. I walk around the city and I am in my place when I'm at the stadium. I've spoken to a lot of people in the stands...it's football. You have to accept it. We know the importance of critiques, both good and bad ones. We have grown because of a lot of them. We make mistakes, but always look for what's good for the club. The most demanding person is the majority shareholder. We talk to Arturo every day. He is the person who is most concerned."
When asked about the transfer window, Joaquín del Olmo said that "I am interested in Tuesday. When December gets here we will see what we are going to do. It's crazy to think in the long term. Today we are thinking
about the next match, and then we will see. We have a boss who has made this team's budget bigger than it would normally be. Thanks to Arturo we have achieved a boost on the financial side. Without it, we would have had about 5 million euros as the budget. We must unite, be calm, and find the key to getting out of this slump. Arturo is worried, but he sent me messages of confidence and unity. He has offered us everything we need to turn this around. He has helped us to compete financially above our level. Arturo and Carso don't need to prove anything."
Joaquín also admitted that "maybe I've made mistakes in not coming out to speak much. The circumstances are different today and we are here, showing our faces. There are things which we have left up in the air, but that
aren't really like that. We are going with the lads from the academy and trusting the team. Perhaps we should have explained that."
Finally, Joaquín del Olmo stated that "I want to thank the fans for their support. We are more united than ever. The disaffection, if there is any, is because of the results. We have to fight, battle and look for solutions. These fans have never abandoned Real Oviedo. We are grateful to all of them. We came here today to show our unity and we are convinced that it will bring us results on the pitch."
