On a day like today, February 17, in the year 1929, Real Oviedo played against Valencia at the Mestalla stadium, their first match in the newly created National League Championship.

Real Oviedo began their participation in the League in the Second Division, as they did not secure a spot in the First Division. Both categories initially consisted of ten teams each.

The lineup of the Oviedo team for that match was as follows: Oscar; Calichi, Trucha, Mieres, Abdón, Cubano, Chuché, Polón, Urrutia, Barril, Tamargo.

In the 17th minute of the match, when the Carbayón team was losing 1-0, Chuché scored what was Real Oviedo's first goal in the League. Five minutes into the second half, Polón scored the goal that put the Asturian team ahead on the scoreboard, 1-2. The match ended with the home team's victory, 4-2.

The photograph illustrating this text shows José María Velasco Álvarez, Chuché, from Aller, the scorer of Real Oviedo's first goal in the League, who years later would become the president of the Carbayón club.
