On a day like today, June 30, in the year 1985, Real Oviedo won the Second Division League Cup by drawing against Atlético Madrileño at the Vicente Calderón stadium, in the capital of Spain.
The final of this competition was played over two legs. The first leg had been played at the Oviedo team's home ground, the Carlos Tartiere stadium in Buenavista, where the Carbayón team had won 1-0, with a goal by García Barrero.
In the second leg, Real Oviedo, whose coach was José Luis Romero, presented the following starting eleven: Viti, Juanito, Vili, Eizmendi, Herrero, Berto, Hevia, Arias, Blanco, García Barrero, Herrera. In the 79th minute, Cárdeno replaced García Barrero. And in the 80th minute, Muñoz replaced Hevia.
At 49 minutes into the match, García Barrero scored to make it 0-1. In the 50th minute, Atlético Madrileño managed to equalize. The match ended 1-1, which meant that Real Oviedo claimed the title of the League Cup, a competition that had been established in Spanish football in 1982 and was played in a two-legged knockout format.
The Second Division League Cup was the sixth national championship won by Real Oviedo, which had already achieved the title of Second Division League champion in 1933, 1952, 1958, 1972, and 1975.
