Exactly one hundred years ago today, on 4th April 1919, Real Club Deportivo de Oviedo was founded. The club would become one of the two teams which merged to create Real Oviedo in 1926.

Founded with the name Club Deportivo de Oviedo, the first president of the club was José Tartiere Lenegre, father of Carlos Tartiere de Alas Pumariño, who would become the first president of Real Oviedo years later.

On 31st August 1919, Deportivo inaugurated its own ground at Teatinos, where some years later Real Oviedo would play its first official match.

On 26th August 1925, Club Deportivo de Oviedo received the title “Real” during halftime of a match at Teatinos that was attended by the Prince of Asturias, Don Alfonso de Borbón y Battenberg. In this moment, the ‘Carbayón’ side was renamed Real Club Deportivo de Oviedo; the name which the club would maintain for the remainder of its existence.

Among the Deportivo ranks was Zabala, one of the best goalscorers of the era. He was the first footballer from a team based in Oviedo to represent the Spanish national team, with which he featured in moments of glory.

On 16th December 1923, Zabala became the first Spanish national team player to score three goals in a single match. He did so in Seville against Portugal, in a clash which ended in a 3-0 victory for Spain. In 1926, Zabala began playing for Real Oviedo and was one of the first idols of ‘Oviedismo’.

Deportivo wore a shirt with vertical blue and white stripes. This year, Real Oviedo, in celebration of its anniversary, is paying homage to Deportivo with the production of 1926 shirts with the colours and badge of the Oviedo club founded in 1919.

Said shirt, which has been on sale since the end of March, will be worn by our first-team players when they take to the field for the match against UD Las Palmas at the Carlos Tartiere stadium this Saturday.
