A Bittersweet Anniversary

Ibra scored what would have been a deserved winner for ‘Los Azules’, but poor fortune denied them in added time, in a 1-1 draw

Real Oviedo today celebrated its 93rd anniversary a few days late, with a party outside the stadium and commemorative shirts in the warmup. There was just one change to the starting eleven from last week, with Javi Hernández replacing Mossa at left wing back.

The rain had a heavy influence on the early stages of the match. Real Oviedo emerged the stronger, but couldn’t create any clear chances. Bárcenas fired over from a free kick, before a contested ball in the area ended up grazing the post. Half an hour into the game, Joselu opened the scoring, but the linesman decided that he had been offside. The hosts were very comfortable in defence and Saúl brought the first half to a close with some fine individual play, including a pass to himself on the byline, before his effort was tipped around the post for a corner. Christian had the final chance of the half as he met the corner, but he was denied by the away keeper.

The second half saw the pitch still more affected by the heavy, relentless rain. Real Oviedo began to create more dangerous opportunities, but so did Pepe Mel’s side. Jimmy burst forward and tried his luck from range, but was denied by Raúl. Saúl then tested the keeper from a free kick, but Raúl tipped it over the bar for a corner. Ibra replaced Joselu and Champagne made his first intervention, keeping out a fine effort following a corner. Toché came off the bench to replace Carlos Martínez, also necessitating a change in formation. Ibra then opened the scoring. The forward was way out on the left wing, and appeared to be playing a cross into Toché in the box, but instead he curled home the opener, making the score 1-0. It appeared that this would be enough to give the Asturians victory, but an added-time cross into the box from Rafa Mir escaped the hands of Champagne and went into the back of the net, in a stroke of misfortune.

The celebration wasn’t complete, but the Tartiere still applauded their side off. The team now has a week off, since the Reus match was due to take place next week.

The next training session will be at 10:30 on Monday at El Requexón.
