Real Oviedo Head Coach Cuco Ziganda today appeared in the Press Room at El Requexón.
With spirits high after the team secured three points last weekend at El Molinón, the Gaffer said that his team is "happy with the victory", and highlighted its importance "on a morale level, for the fans, for the city, and for us. It was important in the league standings and brought an end to the winless run we had been on. We had two good days and then went on to thinking about the weekly work and the next match."
Regarding his team's fine performance against Sporting, Ziganda explained that "we need consistency following that victory. Football is about results and however much you explain things, that is what we depend on. Football is so nice and exciting that you never know who might win. We had had opportunities to win a lot of the match, but when you do actually win everything seems better. Everything is even and it is hard to win matches. We have to keep going and use this newfound confidence to give us security."
Real Oviedo welcome Girona to Asturias this weekend, with the Catalans in the hunt for the playoffs and in good form in recent weeks. Discussing the encounter with this weekend's visitors, the Coach expects to face "an opponent on an upward trajectory and with a lot of motivation. Girona come here on a good run of form and playing well. Their morale will be high. They have their sights on the playoffs, are in the best form they've been in this year, and are focused. We also have our own strengths though. It will be a hard match."
Regarding the importance of getting points in order to move closer to the objective of survival, Ziganda stated that "we have to make sure it stays in our own hands and that the teams at the bottom get no closer to us. We have to win on Sunday. We have the experience of last year and there are always surprises. You have to get to 50 points every year in Segunda and we must not lose sight of that objective."
With respect to the Super League, "this week's hot topic", Ziganda believes that "we've talked about it a lot without having the exact information. The people who really know about it are those involved. We are inside the football world, but looking at it as fans, and it seems like there are some clubs who have more resources and power and want to have even more. They also want to make it stay that way forever, and that sounds bad. If this serves to turn things around, then I hope it makes everything fairer and more rational, because their are some people who criticise these situations but put clubs at threat with their renewals. We live in a consumer society and the big fish eat the little ones, just as the big multinational company eats the little one. Football has been shown to be about more than money, and is about people and their passion. This is a great example of how privileged we are. We have to be thoughtful with our words and actions. We have to do it, not just say it."
Finally, discussing a possible contract renewal with Real Oviedo, Ziganda stated that "I am spending 24 hours a day thinking about the Girona match. That is all we are thinking about."
