Real Oviedo made several changes to the starting eleven, with the whole squad now available for selection for the first home match, and things couldn’t have started any better. Ortuño nudged Los Azules into the lead in the opening minutes, turning home at the back post from a corner. The forward also had the next chance for Real Oviedo, with his header being kept out by Varo. Tejera was the next to have an opportunity, with a powerful effort which flashed across the goal and just wide. The fine play from the Asturians during the first half was translated into chances, but not into further goals.

At the beginning of the second half, Real Oviedo saw Juanjo Nieto receive a second yellow card. Alfonso then intervened to deny the best opportunity for Lugo. Egea was forced to sacrifice muscle in the centre of the field, bringing Johannesson on for Edu Cortina. Real Oviedo looked to the counter attack, and Saúl found himself one-on-one with the keeper after a fine solo run, but his low shot was stopped by Varo. Lugo also found themselves down to ten men following Canella’s red card in the 64th minute. The Galicians tried to find a leveller through possession, while Egea’s side sat back and looked to the counter attack. Tejera won the ball back in the opposition’s half, played a one-two with Obeng, but fired straight at the goalkeeper. The Lugo goal arrived during the four minutes of stoppage time, from a rebound after Alfonso parried the initial shot. The draw was a disappointment for the Tartiere crowd in their first home match of the season.
