On one of those great afternoons at the Carlos Tartiere, Real Oviedo picked up a vital three points, prolonging their recent fine run of form, and strengthening their position in the playoff places.

Up against a Getafe side who started the day two points ahead of them in the table, Fernando Hierro opted for only one change to the same starting eleven which took to the field last Sunday in Miranda de Ebro, with Lucas Torró replacing the injured Vila. Getafe were quick out of the traps, but then Toché fired expertly past Alberto into the bottom left corner in the 17 th minute. Having taken the lead, Real Oviedo went in search of their second, cheered on by the home fans, who didn’t falter in their support even with Getafe on top in the final stages of the first half. Shortly before the interval, Juan Carlos intervened to deny their clearest opportunity, a shot from inside the area. Torró had the final chance of the first half, heading over after a fine run and cross from Saúl Berjón.

In the second half, Jon Erice replaced David Rocha and Getafe made the most of their first chance to draw level. Real Oviedo heads did not drop, however, and they had the necessary patience to continue breaking into the opposition area. Toché almost notched his second of the match, but his first-time strike from Saúl Berjón’s cross went wide under pressure. The Tartiere rose to its feet to applaud the return of Michu, who came on for Borja Domínguez. Johannesson then had the next chance, firing over the bar from the edge of the box, from a ball fed in to him by Susaeta. In the final moments of the match, just before the ninetieth minute, the ball rebounded out to Jon Erice on the edge of the box from a corner, and he fired into the corner of the net to give Real Oviedo victory and unleash pandemonium in the Carlos Tartiere.

At the final whistle the gathered Real Oviedo fans in the largest home crowd of the season could enjoy the three points. The team will resume training tomorrow, at 10:30, at El Requexón.
