Setback in Valladolid

Real Oviedo failed to pick up any points in a match in which they had a lot of possession but didn’t create much, falling to a 3-1 defeat in front of 2,000 travelling Oviedistas

Real Oviedo returned home empty-handed from Valladolid, despite the fact they had kept the game alive almost until injury time. There was just one change to the starting line-up, enforced due to Carlos Hernández’s suspension. Johannesson came into the team to play on the right.

The first chance of the match fell to Aarón Ñíguez from the Asturians’ first attack, before Valladolid made their own first opportunity from a set piece just three minutes into the game. Deivid converted from the corner to open the scoring, as Real Oviedo fell behind once more. Juan Antonio Anquela’s men increased their possession as the minutes ticked by but they were unable to create clear opportunities. The best chances came from set pieces. Christian Fernández’s effort was turned around the post for a corner, before Saúl’s free kick was cleared by the goalkeeper, with Mossa waiting at the back post. Folch had the final chance of the first half, heading over the bar.

Real Oviedo improved in the second half. Linares couldn’t head Aarón’s cross home under pressure. Pucko entered the fray in place of Cotugno as the away side tried to increase their attacking presence. However, despite keeping good control of the ball at all times, Real Oviedo could not create clear-cut opportunities. Aarón had another go from inside the area, with defenders on top of him, and the keeper claimed his effort. Yeboah came on in place of Saúl to freshen up the attack, but just as Real Oviedo started to enjoy more success in attack, up popped Mata to double Valladolid’s lead. With fifteen minutes still remaining, Anquela’s side did not give up. Steven came on to make his debut, and he provided the assist for Linares to cut the deficit and restore hopes of an equaliser. However, as Real Oviedo surged forward in attack, Real Valladolid sealed their 3-1 victory through Michel.

The best performance of the evening came from the 2,000 travelling Oviedistas who applauded their team off. This was despite their inability to gain at least a draw; which would have continued the good run started by two consecutive wins going into this match.
