Real Oviedo bids farewell to the Copa del Rey in the first round. The blue team fell to Club Deportivo Numancia in the penalty shootout after a match in which the "carbayones" had to fight against the tide on several occasions to keep their chances alive. Goals from Isfan and a brace from Goti allowed the Oviedo team to equalize a match that went into extra time tied at three, but the penalty shootout ultimately tipped in favor of the Soria team.
For this Copa debut, Julián Calero opted for a starting eleven with several changes compared to recent matches. Narváez, David Jiménez, Marco Esteban, Carlos Domínguez, Samu, Aldasoro, Villahermosa, Dieguito, Estanis, Jacobo, and Mingo were the players chosen by the blue coach for this clash.
The match began evenly between both teams, in a first half where Real Oviedo sought to settle on the pitch with a team that featured several modifications. Numancia, on the other hand, took advantage of their opportunities and managed to take the lead before halftime, forcing the blues to seek a reaction in the second half.
With the score against them, Oviedo needed to step up after the break to try to change the course of a tie that was becoming increasingly difficult as the minutes passed. The second half could not have started worse for Oviedo's interests. In the 56th minute, Numancia scored their second goal after a defensive error and extended their lead, making qualification for Real Oviedo an uphill battle.
Calero made substitutions in search of a reaction, bringing on Goti, Isfan, and Pablo Sáenz. Later, Morales and Enzo Cazorla also entered the field. The changes had an effect, and Real Oviedo tied the match in just three minutes.
In the 73rd minute came the first of the three goals. Isfan did not miss in a one-on-one and reduced the deficit, giving hope back to the team. Just two minutes later, in the 75th minute, Goti appeared to score the equalizer and complete a comeback that seemed unthinkable moments earlier. The match then entered a frantic dynamic. When Real Oviedo seemed to have achieved the hardest part, Numancia struck again in the 87th minute to take the lead once more.
However, the blues still had one more response. Just a minute later, in the 88th minute, Goti produced an incredible goal from the edge of the area to make it 3-3. A hugely important goal that allowed Oviedo to rise again and take the tie into extra time.
With the score tied at three, the match went into extra time, but the scoreboard remained unchanged. The clearest chance came in the second half when Isfan had a one-on-one opportunity to secure victory for the blue team. The forward was denied by the Numancia goalkeeper, who kept his team alive and prevented Oviedo from completing the comeback.
The penalty shootout ultimately decided the match and left Real Oviedo without a reward after their effort to stay in the tie. Numancia showed greater efficiency and converted all four of their penalty kicks. The blue team, on the other hand, was not as accurate and managed to score only two of their penalties, converted by Villahermosa and Morales. Reina and Pablo Sáenz failed to convert their respective shots, which ultimately sealed Oviedo's elimination in this first round of the Copa del Rey.
