One of the key men in Saturday's draw in Ibiza, Joni Montiel, appeared before the press this morning. The Madrid-born midfielder was asked how he felt about the match on the island, and said that "I felt good the other day. I'm feeling closer to my physical peak. We are training hard and there's a lot of competition. Now it's time to build up a good feeling in training and be prepared for the day that the Gaffer thinks he needs me to start."
Montiel has had a tough few weeks since arriving in Oviedo, having come to the club after being out for a while. He described how "I came back from an injury, which had meant I was out for a couple of months, then I caught COVID, and then I came here. I hadn't trained for a while nor had demands placed on me. I think I needed to train hard to be ready to compete."
He also commented that "there is a lot of competition for places and a lot of quality in all areas of the team." Montiel highlighted what he must do as he waits for a starting place, saying that "we need to be prepared for when the opportunity comes. We have to prove ourselves in our daily work, and train hard so that the Gaffer has a decision to make."
Regarding his natural position, or where he would choose to play if he could, Joni explained that "I've always said that I feel most comfortable in behind the striker, to make the most of my strengths, but I have no problem playing wherever Cuco wants me."
Finally, regarding the potential he sees in the team, the midfielder concluded that "there's a team capable of anything, but the important thing is to win matches. It's a very competitive division."
