On this day, 3rd June 1926, the British coach Frederick Beaconsfield Pentland arrived in Asturias, taking charge of Real Oviedo during the club's first-ever season.
The Gijón-based newspaper El Noroeste reported the news as follows: "Mr. Pentland, the famous English coach, is in Oviedo, where he will establish his residence in order to fulfill the contract agreed with Oviedo FC to train its football teams."
Shortly after its founding in March 1926, Real Oviedo had signed Pentland as their coach. He was a respected figure in football. Under his leadership, Athletic Club de Bilbao had won the Copa del Rey in the 1922–23 season, as well as the Biscay Regional Championship in both the 1922–23 and 1923–24 seasons.
He had also coached the French national team during the 1920 Olympic Games. Pentland came to Real Oviedo from Atlético de Madrid, with whom he had just finished as runners-up in the Copa del Rey final of May 1926.
His agreement with Los Carbayones stipulated that he would take on the technical management of the team for one season from 1st June 1926. He served as head coach of Real Oviedo until 30th June 1927.
Frederick Beaconsfield Pentland died at the age of 78 on 16th March 1962, in Middle Road, on the outskirts of the small village of Lytchett Matravers, in the county of Dorset (United Kingdom).
