Good Play, Many Chances, But No Victory

Real Oviedo picked up a 1-1 draw against Extremadura, despite having deserved to get more out of the game

Although they went close, Anquela’s new-look Real Oviedo side were unable to secure their first victory of the season. They dominated from the outset in terms of possession, play and chances, against an Extremadura side which made the most of set plays.

The Real Oviedo Coach opted to bring several of the new signings into the starting eleven, with the whole of the central midfield making their competitive debuts. Bárcenas and Berjón were on the wings, while Toché was up front. Los Azules dominated right from the opening stages and, after giving a few warnings, didn’t have to wait long for Toché to break the deadlock. A fine pass from Mossa from the left wing left the forward one-on-one with Manu García in the box, and he slotted past the keeper with his left foot. Real Oviedo continued to control possession and push forward in attack, although the best chance before the break was a Tejera shot from the edge of the box which cleared the bar.

The real chances began to arrive after the break. A powerful strike from Boateng was first, before a Javi Muñoz effort just missed the top corner. However, the best chance of the half came after the introduction of Ibra in place of Toché. A sharp counter attack ended with the forward entering the area, but Pardo was able to get back and just get enough of a touch on the ball before Ibra could pull the trigger. It was then that Extremadura equalised. A corner was flicked on by Willy and Alex Barrera nudged the ball home. Saúl Berjón responded with a powerful shot from the edge of the box towards the far post, but Manu García just touched it around the post for a corner. Javi Muñoz was next to try his luck, first time from the byline, but he was also denied by the keeper. The final chance fell to Joselu, but his header was once again tipped around the post for a corner by Manu García.

The team’s next training session will be on Tuesday at 10:00 at El Requexón.
