This Monday, several employees of Real Oviedo attended the Campoamor Theatre to enjoy the performance of the opera Roméo et Juliette, one of the great masterpieces of the French lyrical repertoire. The attendance is part of the collaboration between the Real Oviedo Foundation and the Oviedo Opera Foundation, whose goal is to bring the world of opera and performing arts closer to the social and educational environment of the club.
Composed by Charles Gounod and premiered on April 27, 1867, at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris, Roméo et Juliette is a work inheriting the grand opéra style of Meyerbeer. Its score, of great delicacy and melodic beauty, reflects the lyricism and sensitivity of the French composer, with vocal writing clearly inspired by bel canto.
The libretto, written by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, is based on the famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet (1597) by William Shakespeare, where fate and passion intertwine in the story of the young lovers of Verona. Gounod's opera, full of tenderness, drama, and elegance, portrays the purity of love in the face of hatred and division, opening new paths in the musical language of its time and influencing later composers such as Massenet and Debussy.
The activity allowed Oviedo attendees to enjoy a unique cultural experience, strengthening the connection between sports and culture. Through this type of initiative, the Real Oviedo Foundation and the Oviedo Opera Foundation continue to promote shared values such as effort, artistic sensitivity, teamwork, and solidarity, bringing lyrical art to new audiences and strengthening ties with Oviedo and Asturian society.
