San Claudio today played host to a historic end to the season. Real Oviedo Femenino today achieved promotion to Primera RFEF after a dramatic game in which they faced UDCA Tenerife B. The game was decided on penalty kicks after ending 1-1 in normal time and after extra time. Los Azules gave a lesson in what it means to have faith, character, and Oviedismo.
The match started with a spectacular atmosphere right from the start. The Oviedistas went ahead with a goal in the 20th minute from an own goal that came as a result of a great cross from Laura Aguado. Despite the strong start, the visitors equalised just before half-time from a corner kick. From this moment on the game was highly contested as both teams were equal to each other and there were few shots on goal.
The second half was a tactical battle. Real Oviedo tried to respond by making some attacking changes, but Tenerife kept up the pressure. Anina and Sheila had the best chances to break the deadlock, but the goal never came. Added time was physically very demanding, but Los Carbayones held on and made it to penalty kicks.
The shootout started in dramatic fashion with Andrea missing and suffering an injury which in the end turned out to be just a scare. Saray emerged as the heroine saving two penalties, and Carlota Acín and Anina both converted theirs to keep the dream alive. The glory was Marina Crespo’s, Ovetense and homegrown talent, as she converted the decisive penalty kick.
Oviedo once again makes history in women’s football. Andrea Suárez’s team ends this unforgettable season by being the newest team in Primera RFEF. Carbayón pride.
