The virtual version of the Estadio Municipal El Molinón-Enrique Castro Quini today hosted the charity derby between Real Sporting de Gijón and Real Oviedo, with the aim of raising funds for the battle against COVID-19.  Donations: HERE
The initiative, promoted by both Asturian sides, saw Sporting players Nacho Méndez and Álvaro Vázquez face Real Oviedo's Yoel Bárcenas and Carlos Hernández in computer game versions of the derby.
The first clash, between Yoel Bárcenas and Álvaro Vázquez, ended in a Real Oviedo victory.  The Panamanian winger dominated the ball and looked to find the spaces.  He made the most of the counterattack to bring the full backs forward and to do damage with Yoel and Saúl. Yoel Bárcenas was dominant, and the match ended in a comprehensive Real Oviedo win.
Nacho Méndez and Carlos Hernández then faced each other, in what was a much more even match, which ended in a draw.  The two players battled for possession.  Sporting pressed high up the pitch with two strikers, while Real Oviedo had long spells of possession and looked to do damage with Borja between the lines.  Carlos grabbed a deserved equaliser in added time.
In the final match, Nacho Méndez and Yoel Bárcenas faced one another, with the Real Oviedo winger grabbing another comprehensive victory.  Despite both teams having chances in the first half, Los Azules clearly dominated the second half.  Yoel looked to use the wings to good effect and managed to score even more goals, while defending well against the quick
combination play employed by Nacho Méndez.
This charitable initiative had the aims of raising funds for the battle against COVID-19 and making the quarantine period more bearable for fans of both teams.  It demonstrated that the battle against this virus can only be won through strength in unity.
Through the hashtag #EsteDerbiLoGanamosTodos (We all win this derby) the Asturian sides are seeking to do our bit in the fight against COVID-19, starting a charitable fund to help combat the effects of the virus.  The funds raised will go to the Red Cross, who will be in charge of managing and allocating the earnings through its RESPONDE plan.
The Red Cross' RESPONDE Plan against COVID-19 seeks to help people in vulnerable situations and the general population, through the mobilisation and actions of 40,000 volunteers.  They will make the planned responses a reality throughout the nation, using their more than 1,400 points of care.
The Red Cross will provide support to a million people, who will receive attention and telephone companionship.  In addition, 25,000 families will receive basic supplies, 16,000 people will be given support in terms of employment, and 3,000 homeless people will be given a place to sleep.
