Real Oviedo defender Christian Fernández appeared in the Press Room today at El Requexón.

After Saturday’s victory against Alcorcón, the Real Oviedo captain stated that “we are keeping our run going by continuing to work hard. We hope to keep this form going in Albacete and take something from the league leader. December, when others were questioning the Coach, the team, and our form, was the period when we had the most faith. Now we are reaping the rewards.”

When asked about the feeling in the squad regarding the team’s good form, the Cantabrian commented that “we have to keep a level head. This is football and we live off results here. Being able to enjoy peace of mind depends on us.”

With respect to being chosen as one of the candidates for best player in the league during the last matchday, the defender was “grateful”, pointing out that the honour “reflects the performance of the whole team. The vital thing now is to go to Albacete and get those three points.”

Comparing Real Oviedo’s spot in a playoff position to previous seasons, Christian Fernández reasoned that “if we look at the statistics they are all negative, since we haven’t made the playoffs. It’s true that we’ve always kept fighting until the final matchday, but success lies in the club not having any debt and always fighting.”

Asked about competition and how it can benefit the team, the ‘Carbayón’ defender thinks that “there is a lot of competition, but whoever goes out onto the pitch is essential for the team. The other day we ended the match with great players still on the bench, and that’s a luxury. Starters and substitutes; it is all very subjective.”

Finally, talking about his role within the team, the defender concluded by saying that “I’ve had three very good years here with Real Oviedo, but when you are involved in certain moments it seems different. My job is to be solid, provide the team with soundness and work quietly. I’m not looking for fame or attention, I just want to do what the Coach asks of me.”
