Real Oviedo’s defender, Christian Fernández, addressed the media today after visiting the Real Oviedo Campus.

The Cantabrian assessed the journey undergone in the preseason declaring that “at the moment we are doing well, I believe we are doing a good job. It has been a very demanding start, looking for a good foundation for the year. We need composure and constancy; it’s going to be a long year.”

Regarding his feelings at the start of this new season, which will be his fourth with ‘Los Carbayones,’ the defender commented that “when you are new, everything is uncertain, but now after four years, that role changes. I’m satisfied with these years, but we lack playing for the promotion, it is the thorn that we still have.” In addition, concerning the team’s objective, the defender recognizes that “we must have an illusion to fight for higher levels. We cannot lose sight of reality though, we need to get fifty points as soon as possible and then think of other major objectives. This team is ambitious but objective and consistent.”

When asked about the lads who came up from the B-Team, Christian emphasized that “it is fantastic to be surrounded by young people with ambition. They have grown up being Real Oviedo fans and that’s an extra motivation. Being with these youngsters makes you want to be better, and that’s empowering. We are happy with the players that have arrived, we have to help them and take away the responsibility.”

Concerning the winning mentality that the last campaign referred to, the defender believes that “being a winning team starts with oneself, it starts with the ambition to achieve goals. I prefer to be surrounded by kids from the B-Team, who are filled with desire than to be surrounded by football players who just spend time. I prefer to have young people who love Real Oviedo. I do not have a magic wand to predict where Real Oviedo will be in June, but I hope that the goal is achieved. The process is going to be long and hard, with good and bad times. We have to create a family.”

Finally, regarding the team that is being formed and by the incorporations in the defensive line, Christian believes that “with the team that we have we can compete one-on-one against anybody. It is true that people can come and provide quality, and they will be welcome. We want committed people. In defense, there are lads who come from having good seasons. Now we have to see the performance they give in the second division, but I think they can adapt perfectly to the role that the coach wants. We have to help them in their learning,” concluded the Cantabrian.
