The final matchday in Group I Subgroup B in the Segunda División B today saw Real Oviedo Vetusta welcome Burgos to El Requexón. The visitors ended up triumphing 1-0.
Los Azules went into today's game fully aware of the importance of winning three points in order to secure safety ahead of the next phase of the season. Emilio Cañedo opted to select the same starting eleven as he had used last weekend in Valladolid.
Burgos dominated the first half, but Real Oviedo Vetusta were solid in defence and managed to deal with the away side's attacking opportunities. However, the Asturians were unable to find the final ball to threaten the visitors. Burgos had the best chance of the first half, with two successive strikes hitting the post, but the two teams went in for the interval with the score 0-0.
Real Oviedo Vetusta pushed forward in the second half, taking control of the play and searching relentlessly to break the deadlock, beginning to create opportunities in the process. Erik Aguado, Gassan and Joselu were the substitutes introduced by Cañedo. The B team surged forward in attack, but a fine counter attack from the visitors saw Burgos open the scoring. The match ended with the Asturians pushing for an equaliser, and a controversial moment when the referee turned down Vetusta appeals for a handball inside the area.
Real Oviedo Vetusta will now have to fight for survival in the relegation playoffs. They will learn their fixtures for the next phase of the season in the coming weeks, once the Subgroup A campaign has come to an end.
