Real Oviedo took a step forward in Villaviciosa, in their fourth preseason friendly of the summer. They did so against a Gimnástica de Torrelavega side, who were unable to dominate possession at any point in the encounter, and in the process the Asturians created enough chances to have won by a greater margin.

Anquela once again opted for a starting eleven featuring several of the youth team players who have been involved regularly with the first team. The team was strong in defence, won the ball back quickly and spread the ball around well in the midfield. The main danger came down the wings, and it was from there that Johannesson created the first clear chance, in the fifteenth minute of the match, but the Cantabrian side’s keeper denied him. The ball had been won back and fed to him by Yoel Bárcenas. After several minutes of control of possession but little threat, Javi Muñoz’s shot was kept out by Alex Ruiz, before Bárcenas went close to applying the finishing touch. Toché found himself one-on-one after a fine long ball from Saúl Berjón, but the referee called play back for a questionable offside decision.

Anquela kept the majority of the team the same for the first few minutes of the second half, with just a few changes. Two good chances were quick to arrive. First, Mossa’s ball in was met by Carlos Hernández at the back post, who headed across the goalmouth to Toché, but the captain was just unable to reach the ball. However, the forward would get on the scoresheet in the next attack. Forlín had the first effort, but Toché drove home from the rebound to make the score 1-0. Real Oviedo then made six substitutions, bringing on the remaining youth team players who had been called up to the youth team squad. Steven added the second goal after some fine play by Tejera. Real Oviedo continued to push forward in attack, and Borja Sánchez went close to adding a third as his shot hit the post and rolled across the goal-line, without crossing the line. In the final stages, a defensive error left Primo one-on-one with Alfonso, and the striker managed to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The team will return to training with a double session at El Requexón on Monday.
