Sergio Tejera, one of our first-team captains, appeared before the media in the Press Room this morning and reflected upon the team's current situation.
The Catalan discussed how these have been "some difficult weeks and we haven't been getting the results we want. The squad is working very hard, but it's not being reflected out on the pitch. We really want to turn things around." Regarding the keys to getting the situation back on track, Tejera said that "the group does a lot of work during the week. We aren't finding the finishing touch in the opposition box. We are missing the final ball and are not taking our chances. Matches are won on small details and we have to pay them much greater attention. The key to turning this around is the group. We have to stick together more than ever and watch out for those minor details in both areas. We have to be a lot more careful."
The Captain also made the feeling in the changing room very clear, saying that "the group is aware of its responsibilities and of the work we need to do. We know how many people are behind us. We know we have to work well during the week and we also know that we can play well, because we have shown that. We are going to do that again."
With respect to the the impact that injury or Covid absences may have on the team, the midfielder does not see them as an excuse. "It is never easy when you have people out, but the squad is prepared to cover the absence of any player. The squad has shown that no matter who plays, they can perform at a great level."
Talking about the goals conceded from set pieces and his explanation for the issue, Tejera highlighted that "corners are one-to-one, man-to-man duels, and we have to be 100% focused. The reality is that they are punishing us heavily. We are going to focus on them a lot more and keep working on them and watching out for the minor details. That's what I've been saying all along. It's crucial to manage those details, both in attack and in defence, and to minimise the risks, because they are punishing us heavily."
Finally, regarding his objective, the Catalan stated that "the excitement hasn't dropped since the start of the season. We still have the same hunger to achieve as much as possible, but after this run we have slipped closer towards the bottom of the table. We have to be responsible with what we do, and I think that the important thing now is to think about Monday's match. We need to restore that confidence that you only get with results. From that point, we will be able to keep growing."
