Real Oviedo brought their LaLiga Smartbank 2021/22 season to an end with a victory against UD Ibiza at the Carlos Tartiere today. Unfortunately results at El Molinón and El Plantío saw the team from the capital of Asturias finish just outside the playoff places.
Real Oviedo emerged very strongly for the first half. The first opportunity to take the lead came in just the second minute, but the referee disallowed Samuel Obeng's goal for offside. Los Azules did not stop trying, and got their reward in the 18th minute, with a sublime Borja Sánchez lob opening the scoring. The team created further chances during the first half, but went in for halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The first setback came in the second half, when Ibiza grabbed an equaliser. However, Borja Bastón would put Los Azules back into the lead from Mossa's cross into the box, and the Tartiere believed once more. Ibiza then fired home a fine strike to level the scores again. The whole stadium was checking scores elsewhere during stoppage time, and meanwhile Borja Bastón converted from the penalty spot to make the score 3-2. For a few seconds confusion reigned in the Tartiere, with Oviedistas and players celebrating incorrect information about the match at El Plantío.
The squad was more united than ever as they took a lap of honour, receiving a standing ovation from the fans. See you next season. Hala Oviedo, always.
