The first victory of the season arrived against Sporting de Gijón. Real Oviedo called upon all of its pride, courage and determination to triumph over its biggest rival.
Ziganda's side went into the first derby of the season with Christian Fernández, Mossa, Nahuel and Blanco Leschuk coming into the starting eleven seen in Albacete. The first half saw a Real Oviedo side which was very well-organised in defence and which created the better of the chances. The opening 45 minutes was marked by the intensity both sides put into the match. Tejera had a chance a few minutes into the match, but his effort went just over Mariño's net. The two teams alternated possession, with stages in which Real Oviedo had to work hard in defence and deal with the Sporting attacks. Nahuel, Sangalli, Obeng and Blanco Leschuk made the away defence feel uncomfortable, with threatening moves which they were unable to convert. A combination from the wide men did however see Real Oviedo win a penalty, with Javi Fuego bringing down Marco Sangalli. Sergio Tejera converted from the spot, and the teams went in for halftime with the scores 1-0.
After the break, the visitors took control of the play, but found themselves up against a Real Oviedo side which did not allow them any opportunity to threaten Femenías' goal. Ziganda brought Borja Sánchez and Javi Mier on to freshen up the Carbayón attack. Diegui, Mujica and Carlos Hernández all also entered the fray in the final stages to play their part in helping the team to earn the three points.
Los Azules secured victory in the derby once more, and the win served the reinforce the good feeling around the squad. The team will be back in training tomorrow, as it begins to prepare for the weekend's match against Girona.
