Real Oviedo goalkeeper Leo Román appeared in the Press Room at El Requexón this morning ahead of another day's work under the orders of Luis Carrión.
Ahead of the imminent start of the second half of the season, which will begin with Saturday's fixture against Amorebieta, the shot stopper stated that "we are looking forward to competing. We are all excited and ready to start again. We have to go for the win." Discussing the two week's preparation following the return from the Christmas holidays, Leo Román admitted that "last week was a heavier workload, but this one has been more normal."
Luis Carrión will have a number of first-team players unavailable for Saturday's match against the Basque outfit, but the keeper argued that "that's not an excuse for us. We all contribute and are moving in the same direction. The Gaffer is competitive and gets everyone involved. I think that it's positive that whoever comes in is going to do a good job. The competition for places here is crazy, but it's a good thing and a sign that the club is doing things well."
Asked about his fine performances during the first half of the season, Leo Román highlighted that "I try to take it one game at a time and enjoy it. Now we have to keep going like this, focus on Amorebieta, and see how things go. I came here with the intention of proving myself. That's the reason I came here. It's a tough place to play, and it's where you see who the good players are. I am happy in Oviedo. I am trying to improve every day, train at 100%, and get better."
With respect to the team's chances in the second half of the season, the goalkeeper reasoned that "it wasn't the best start and it wasn't easy to finish 2023 in the way that we did. We had a strong mentality, that of a winning team. There's a long way to go still and little by little we will climb the table. There is no rush but also no time to rest, and we need to keep this form up. It's reasonable to aim for everything, but we are focusing on the next match. We are trying to win each match and then see where we finish."
Regarding the upcoming opponent, Amorebieta, Leo Román highlighted that "it's a good team. We have to be aware of what they can do, but we have to focus on ourselves. We have to do things in the right way and finish the season how we ended 2023.·
Finally, asked about the fact that the club is moving closer to a record-breaking number of season-ticket holders, Leo commented that "it is exciting that the club is about to reach 21,000. It's something very nice and it also means you enjoy it more, since this is all about the fans. If we have more supporters there, it will prove that we are doing well."
