Real Oviedo went into Matchday 3 in LaLiga EA Sports with the objective of offering their fans a victory. Los Carbayones returned to the Carlos Tartiere a week after the defeat against Real Madrid and with the intention of securing the first three points of the season. Aarón Escandell, Nacho Vidal, David Costas, Dani Calvo, Rahim, Ilyas, Dendoncker, Reina, Ejaria, Ilic, and Fede Viñas made up Veljko Paunovic's starting eleven for the fixture against Real Sociedad.
Pablo Marín had the first chance of the match for the visitors, forcing Aarón into action, but the keeper tipped the ball around the post for a corner. Ejaria had the opening opportunity for Real Oviedo, but the English midfielder's low effort grazed the upright. Ten minutes later saw a pre-prepared corner lead to Ilic firing over the bar from the edge of the box. The worst news of the first half saw Ilyas forced off by injury, with the winger being replaced by Hassan. Aarón had to make a fine save to deny Oyarzabal. Shortly afterwards, joy erupted at the Carlos Tartiere. Hassan won the ball in his own half, got the better of Gorrotxategi, and pulled the ball back for Dendoncker to fire home from the edge of the area to make the score 1-0. It was Los Carbayones' first goal following the return to Primera División.
Real Sociedad pushed in search of the equaliser right from the start of the second half, and had two good chances. First Oskarsson and then Oyarzabal went close, but both were denied by Escandell. Two minutes later, Hassan was inches away from doubling the advantage, curling an effort onto the post. Cazorla, Rondón, Sibo, and Brekalo came on during the second half, and the Venezuelan forward looked to catch the away keeper off his line, but his shot went wide. A 78th minute Turrientes volley went over the bar, following chances in the final moments for Brekalo, Rondón, and Turrientes.
8,840 days and 24 years later, Real Oviedo were able to celebrate a goal and a victory in Primera División.
