A perfect morning of fine play, a good result and unity at the Carlos Tartiere saw Real Oviedo secure a solid victory against Rayo Vallecano and achieve the desired victory, leaving the team satisfied and fans delighted

Fernando Hierro tweaked his starting lineup, bringing in David Fernández and Jon Erice in place of Óscar Gil and Edu Bedia, and the desired impact was clear right from kick-off. Real Oviedo were working hard, and the first opportunity would fall to the feet of Linares in the tenth minute. Toche’s pass from the right saw Linares get a shot in from the back post, but Toño prevented the forward from opening the scoring in a one on one. Rayo responded by hitting the back of the net, but it was disallowed for offside, and Real Oviedo were strong in defence. The game was more than half an hour old when Real Oviedo broke the deadlock. Linares controlled a long ball from Michu, got the better of the two centre backs who were
unable to stop him, and fired a low shot past Toño to open the scoring. Rayo sought to get back on level terms before the interval, and Juan Carlos would make a fine save to keep out a back post header from a left wing free kick.

In the second half Real Oviedo were conscious that they could not reduce their work rate, and that the advantage on the scoreboard was not enough to compensate for a drop in intensity. Toché forced a corner from a fine individual run. David Rocha tried his luck from a free kick just outside the area, and his effort grazed the crossbar. Rayo tried to work their way to the Real Oviedo goal, but without success. Indeed, Real Oviedo would then extend their lead through a penalty, won by Michu and finished impeccably by Toché. This made the score 2-0, and meant the final twenty minutes of the match were more relaxed. Real Oviedo had further chances to increase their lead, but the Madrid side forced Toché’s effort wide in a one on one, as well as clearing Rocha’s subsequent corner.

The final whistle saw Los Azules pick up the three points, meaning that they have now secured seven points from their last three games. Real Oviedo enjoyed themselves, and provided enjoyment to their fans, on a sunny Autumn morning at the Carlos Tartiere.
