Real Oviedo got back to winning ways on a night in which Linares was twice on target, prolonging an unbeaten run which has lifted the side into the playoff positions.

Fernando Hierro made just one change to the starting eleven, bringing in Susaeta in place of Jon Erice, to face a CD Tenerife side which arrived at the Carlos Tartiere in need of points. The ‘canaries’ dominated the early exchanges, with Real Oviedo’s only effort coming from a David Rocha strike which narrowly avoided the top corner. Michu was next to try his luck with a shot from the edge of the box, but his attempt was cleared by Tenerife’s defence. Shortly afterwards however, in the very next attack, Real Oviedo managed to break the deadlock. A perfect counter attack from Toché, Michu and Linares saw the latter’s low shot beat Dani in the Tenerife goal and open the scoring. The final stages of the first half was stop-start due to several confrontations, which ended with the distribution of a handful of yellow cards for either side.

In the second half, Real Oviedo managed to gain more possession of the ball, but Tenerife had opportunities to equalise, with Juan Carlos twice coming to the rescue to foil the away team’s attacks. Toché created Real Oviedo’s clearest chances, first from a set piece, and then from a shot from the left under pressure, following a fine ball from Linares, and which was kept out by Dani. Linares came back to the forefront of the action to fire the ball against the post, as Real Oviedo continued their pursuit of the second goal to confirm their victory. In the final minutes of the clash the blues’ attackers would finally get their reward, Linares sealing the victory with the second and decisive goal of the match, in front of an exuberant crowd at the Carlos Tartiere.

This result sees Real Oviedo climb to sixth in the table, and on Wednesday the team will begin to prepare for next Sunday’s match against UCAM Murcia.
