The Press Room at El Requexón today played host to the presentation of the award for October’s ‘Jugador Cinco Estrellas’ Player of the Month, Javi Hernández. After arriving at Real Oviedo Vetusta this Summer, the defender has, through hard work and sacrifice, managed to earn himself a place in the first team, little by little. He put in fine performances against Sporting de Gijón, Osasuna, Nàstic de Tarragona and Mallorca and was selected for the award by the fans of ‘Los Azules’. The supporters chose between the five players nominated by the beer company through their Twitter handle, @futbolmahou.
After being presented with the award by Iván Hortal of the Cantina de Gascona restaurant, on behalf of Mahou, the defender appeared before the media.
Javi Hernández began by analysing the great spell he is having personally, admitting that it’s been “a nice week, with the award and the victory in the derby.”
Asked about his experience during last weekend’s derby against Sporting at the Carlos Tartiere, Javi Hernández highlighted that, “you get goosebumps. It was special. The fans carried us forward right from the hotel. I’d been told about it, but the truth is that experiencing it is something different.” In addition, asked how he found out about being picked and the first thing he thought, he commented that, “I hadn’t realised. Everyone was called up and we were told the team at the stadium. That’s when I found out. I thought about those close to me, about my family. I just wanted to give everything. Saúl told me to enjoy it and give everything, and that has stayed with me.”
Regarding his swift adjustment to life in the first team, the defender highlighted that, “I came here to play in the B team, but I was moved up within a few weeks. It’s all about trusting yourself.” Finally, having won both the B team derby at El Molinón and now the first team derby at the Carlos Tartiere this weekend, Javi Hernández commented that, “they were two nice moments, but this one was the most special match of my career. It was the most important match I’ve played in so far,” he concluded.
