Real Oviedo played Matchday 20 in LaLiga SmartBank today against Real Valladolid, in front of more than a thousand travelling Oviedistas. The Asturians would end up losing 2-1.
Femenías; Carlos Isaac, David Costas, Arribas, Pierre; Jimmy, Luismi, Brugman; Jirka, Borja Sánchez and Borja Bastón made up the starting eleven for today's encounter.
Real Oviedo were well-organised defensively during the first half, allowing Real Valladolid control of the ball and looking to hurt the hosts on the counter attack. The home team took the lead in the tenth minute. The Asturians looked to get in behind the full backs after the setback. One such long ball saw Jirka set up Borja Bastón to turn home the equaliser, making the score 1-1. Los Azules began defending fantastically well once more following the leveller, but an unfortunate mistake from Femenías in stoppage time saw Real Valladolid regain the advantage just before the interval.
Real Valladolid went close from a free kick after the break. Los Azules did not let their heads drop and continued their attempts to level the scores. Real Oviedo controlled the play, while Real Valladolid looked to do damage on the counter. The referee would award Real Oviedo a penalty for a foul on Brugman, but Borja Bastón's effort went over the bar. Pombo, Sangalli, Matheus, Lucas, and Joni Montiel were the substitutes used by Ziganda, but neither side was able to create any further chances.
Los Carbayones were defeated at the José Zorrilla, despite the backing of more than one thousand Oviedistas in the stands, and were unable to pick up the three points which would have moved them right into the playoff picture.
