The latest preseason fixture of the summer saw Real Oviedo play in the 70th edition of the Emma Cuervo Trophy, against CD Lugo in Ribadeo.
Ziganda opted for a starting eleven made up of Joan Femenías; Lucas, Grippo, Costas, Cornud; Sangalli, Javi Mier, Jimmy; Viti, Borja Sánchez and Obeng, and the Asturians dominated the play and the opportunities from the outset. Grippo was first to go close from a venomous free kick, but the Galician team's keeper tipped it out for a corner. Sangalli was then involved in a very good move, including a through ball to himself, before he fired narrowly wide of the far past. Real Oviedo continued to lay siege to the away team's goal, and Femenías was not called into action. Then, a fine through ball from Jimmy found Javi Mier, who made the score 1-0 in the 35th minute. Five minute later, Antonetti grabbed an equaliser for Lugo from a long ball.
Jirka came on for Obeng at the start of the second half, while Matheus would come on for the club for the first time shortly afterwards, entering the fray alongside Alex Cardero. The Asturian attacks continued, but without the finishing touch. Borja Sánchez was denied by the keeper. Mossa and then Christian also came on, while Lugo changed almost the entire team. Real Oviedo had two further clear chances. A lovely Alex Cardero volley was saved by the keeper, while Jirka headed just wide from a Mossa cross.
The match was decided on a penalty shootout. Alex Cardero fired wide, giving CD Lugo victory in the 70th Emma Cuervo Trophy. Real Oviedo will return to training at 18:00 on Monday at El Requexón.
