Real Oviedo defeated Cádiz CF 2-1 today and finished the regular league season in third place. Elche's 4-0 away win at Deportivo de la Coruña ruled out the possibility of automatic promotion for Los Azules, who fought to the end and did what was in their own hands. Thoughts now turn to preparing for the playoff semi final against Almería.

Paraschiv and De La Hoz were the two main changes to Paunovic's starting eleven today. Fully aware of what could be at stake, Real Oviedo emerged strongly, pressing their opponent back right from the kick-off. Los Carbayones got the reward of the opening goal from a spectacular strike from Seoane from the edge of the box. In the 31st minute Diakite levelled the scoring with another fine strike, but Real Oviedo maintained their composure. The attacks down both flanks were relentless, and in the 40th minute Nacho Vidal scored another wonderful strike to put the hosts back into the lead.

Cardero, Pomares, and Paulino came on in the second half to give a rest to Rahim, Colombatto, and Hassan. The third goal to seal the victory didn't arrive, and there was a worrying moment when Cádiz appealed for a late penalty, but in the end the referee waved away the claims. The win means that Real Oviedo will face Almería at 21:00 on Saturday.

The final whistle at the Tartiere was greeted with applause. Santi Cazorla then spoke to the fans, reading a letter that said "Thank you, Oviedistas. The journey continues. And the best is yet to come. ¡Vamos, Oviedo!"
