Real Oviedo captain, Christian Fernández, appeared in the Press Room at El Requexón.
Following today’s training session, the defender admitted that “we are treating the week with professionalism. We have the smallest of chances, but we represent a club and its history. We have to give it our all and finish the year in the best way possible.”
Regarding the team’s current situation, which sees them with only a slight chance of reaching the playoffs, the Cantabrian believes that “it is not just about the consequences of this year, but also the fact that it prolongs those of previous years. We are a good team. We have to be hungry to achieve something extra; that’s what we’ve lacked. It is true that we have competed well, but we have lacked an X factor.”
Expanding on this point, the defender reasoned that “you either have it or you don’t. I can’t tell a teammate to be like me or to be like someone else. It is a matter of personality. Everything has to come together and work in the same direction. The matches that have slipped away in added time have not depended on something tactical, but rather on mentality.”
Speaking about his personal feelings, Christian Fernández remarked that “I'm on my way to turning 34, and my opportunities are running out. I envision playing in Primera, and I intend to do so. I want it to be with Real Oviedo, to be able to show my gratitude with a promotion.”
Lastly, when asked about next season’s project, the defender understands that “when people were having their contracts renewed and had continuity, things did not turn out too badly. We were in average form. We have been one step away, but everything depends on individual and winning attitudes. We have to change some factors which influence the day-to-day work,” concluded the defender.
