Real Oviedo needed to win, and they did it.  It took a VAR check and a penalty kick to earn Javi Rozada's side three vital points, against a Rayo Vallecano side who arrived at the Tartiere in just as desperate need of points as their hosts.
Not even a minute of the match had passed when Juanjo Nieto went on a fine run and gave Real Oviedo the lead, providing the team with a big foothold in the match right from the off.  Sangalli had a chance to double the lead shortly afterwards, but he was denied by Dimitrievski.  Embarba equalised in the tenth minute, but the Asturians didn't lose their composure.  Real Oviedo competed well but couldn't create many clear chances before the break.
With heavy rain circling the Carlos Tartiere for the second half, Javi Rozada turned to his bench, bringing Samuel Obeng on in place of Yoel Bárcenas.  Borja Sánchez had a good chance on the counterattack, but the academy graduate grazed the post as he aimed for the top corner.  Real Oviedo continued to believe and to look for the victory, and after a VAR check they were eventually awarded a penalty when Juanjo Nieto was brought down in the box.  Ortuño converted from the spot to give Real Oviedo a 2-1 victory.
These were three crucial points for Real Oviedo.  The side will return to training at 10:30 tomorrow, at El Requexón.
