Real Oviedo were unchanged for the third consecutive match, as they went in search of another victory to bid farewell to 2019 at the Carlos Tartiere, but it wasn't to be.  League leaders Cádiz came into the match having not won in Oviedo for 47 years, but they overcame the statistics in a controversy-riddled game.
The opening minutes developed in much the same way as in recent Real Oviedo matches.  The home side enjoyed some fine link-up play and possession, but they were unable to create too much danger this time.  Cádiz were being kept under control, but they made no mistake from their very first opportunity.  A Salvi cross was headed home by Alex Fernández in the 30th minute to make the score 1-0.  Tejera had the best chance for the Asturians, but his shot from the edge of the area was tipped around the post for a corner by Cifuentes.  The end of the first half saw Christian Fernández on the receiving end of an unpunished violent act from Fali.  The Real Oviedo defender was forced to receive treatment for a bloody nose after receiving an elbow to the face.  The referee didn't even give a foul, and the teams went in for halftime with the home fans showing their anger.
The second half saw Cádiz improve with the lead on the scoresheet.  As Real Oviedo pushed forward, the visitors added their second, with a goal whichwas originally disallowed but then awarded following a VAR check.  Real Oviedo kept going, but with more heart than threat, and despite their attacks they were unable to cut the deficit nor create clear opportunities.
This was a painful defeat at the Carlos Tartiere. Next Saturday will see the final match of the year, as Real Oviedo face Racing de Santander at El Sardinero.
