Pride Intact but Empty-Handed

Real Oviedo left El Molinón empty-handed but with their pride intact, in a match decided by refereeing decisions. The travelling fans were once again exemplary; offering non-stop backing to their team, and applauding them off at fulltime.

Sporting emerged strongly for the match, but Real Oviedo withstood the early attacks. Bárcenas was first to go close for ‘Los Azules’, heading wide from Saúl Berjón‘s ball in from the byline. Real Oviedo’s control of the game grew but they lacked drive, in a match constantly interrupted by fouls. Tejera’s shot under pressure was saved by Mariño, before some misfortune in the Real Oviedo defence saw the hosts open the scoring.

The away side improved in the second half, and Bárcenas almost beat a defender to a fine Mossa ball in from the left. Anquela shuffled his pack, bringing on Ibra and Johannesson. Shortly afterwards, the referee awarded the hosts a highly dubious penalty, which Champagne kept out. Real Oviedo were still in with a chance, and Anquela brought Toché on for the final fifteen minutes. The ‘Oviedistas’ on the field and in the stands pushed on. Saúl and Toché both had shots, but were denied by the defence and Mariño respectively. Ibra scored the equaliser in the ninetieth minute. The referee initially gave the goal, before changing his mind, leaving Real Oviedo without the point that they richly deserved.

The team will return to training at 10:30 tomorrow, at El Requexón.
