Real Oviedo travelled to Santander today for a key battle in the fight for automatic promotion. Paunovic's side went into the encounter in form following the victories over Levante and Huesca, and with the clear objective of picking up three points to stay in the fight for automatic promotion going into the final three fixtures. The Coach opted for a starting eleven made up of Aarón Escandell, Nacho Vidal, Costas, Dani Calvo, Rahim, Sibo, Colombatto, Hassan, Sebas, Cazorla, and Alemão.
Racing dominated the early stages of the encounter, although they were unable to convert their possession into chances. Real Oviedo looked to stay solid in defence, and began to threaten as the minutes ticked by. Alemão twice tried his luck, without reward. However, just before half-time, Dani Calvo broke the deadlock, heading home from a Cazorla corner. The more than 1,200 travelling Oviedistas celebrated, fully aware of the importance of the goal.
The hosts gave it everything after the interval, as they went in search of the equaliser. Michelin struck the woodwork with a powerful free kick, but Real Oviedo continued to demonstrate defensive solidity and a clear game plan. In the 66th minute Paunovic made a double substitution, bringing on Viñas and Seoane in place of Sibo and Sebas Moyano. The persistence of the Cantabrians would finally get its reward, with Mario García levelling the scores from range in the 70th minute.
During the final stages both teams gave it everything in search of all three points, but in the end the match ended all-square.
