A new league season has now got underway for Real Oviedo Vetusta. Jaime Álvarez's side began their 2023/2024 campaign this Sunday with a lot of new faces in the starting line-up. The coach opted for an eleven made up of Marco, Osky, Marco Esteban, Jaime Vázquez, Charbel, Yayo, Iván, Sesé, Darío Hidalgo, Miguélez and Xavi Sola for today's encounter with Racing Club Villalbés in the Segunda Federación.
The opening stages saw a great deal of respect and evenness between the two sides, with Los Azules looking to impose their playing style on the game. The Galicians were very organised and solid in defence, and it would be the away side who managed to take the lead from their first attack. Álex made the most of a right-wing cross from Jose to break the deadlock for the visitors.
Jaime Álvarez's team looked to bounce back from the setback, but Cristian doubled the lead for Villalbés just seven minutes later, and the two teams went in for halftime with the score 2-0. The Asturians made four changes for the second half, as they looked to turn the game around. Enol, Omar, Dieguito and Berlanga replaced Charbel, Osky, Jaime Vázquez and Xavi Sola.
The substitutions and new formation made a difference, and Santi Miguélez managed to cut the deficit from the penalty spot in the 51st minute. The home team took a step forward as they looked to level the match, but they would suffer a further setback shortly afterwards. Some misfortune would see Pablo Rey's effort deflect past Marco to make the score 3-1.
Vetusta searched for a goal to bring them back into the match, but Racing Villalbés were able to maintain their defensive solidity and barely conceded any chances. It was a tough start to the season for the B team. Los Carbayones will look again to claim the first three points of the season next weekend, when they travel to Torrelavega to face Gimnástica.
