The two sides went into today's battle in Cartagena with three very important points at stake. Real Oviedo opted for a change in formation and in personnel, with Javi Mier coming in behind Borja Bastón and Sangalli and Borja Sánchez on the wings. They were up against a Cartagena side featuring former Real Oviedo captain Sergio Tejera in the starting eleven.
Following a tense opening few minutes, a Borja Sánchez left-wing cross would be cleared to the edge of the box, from where Luismi fired home the opening goal of the encounter. While Cartagena then began to dominate possession, the Asturians were not forced into too much action defensively. One unfortunate passage of play saw the hosts awarded a penalty for handball in the box. Rubén Castro equalised from the spot to make the halftime score 1-1.
The second half started with a couple of dangerous chances for Los Azules, before the home team saw Dauda receive a straight red for a strong tackle on Costas. Real Oviedo would make a double change shortly afterwards, with Joni Montiel and Matheus Aiás coming on. It would be the former who scored a wonderful winning goal, curling the ball into the top corner to give Real Oviedo a 2-1 lead. Shortly afterwards Tejera would receive a red card following a VAR check, for a foul on Joni Montiel. The final minutes would see Hugo Rama denied a goal for offside and great tension, as the Asturians held on for a very important victory in Cartagena.
