Real Oviedo defender Christian Fernández appeared in the Press Room this morning and responded to questions from the media, with little more than a week remaining until the season opener. He was asked which position he would feel more comfortable in going into the new season, whether at centre back, as has been his usual position in recent times, or at left back, where he has spent most of his footballing career. Christian responded that "I consider myself to be a team player, and a club man. I will play wherever I can help the team most, and wherever the Coach decides I can contribute most. I'm not ruling myself out of any position."
With respect to the signings made in the heart of the defence, the Cantabrian reasoned that "competition is positive and I believe that it's a situation which will benefit the team. Competition always makes you grow."
Asked what his situation is going into the start of the season, Christian Fernández stated that "all of us that are competing for a centre back position are starting from zero. The fact that that competition exists is going to benefit the team, as I said before. The only thing we should worry about is making sure that we are in top condition for whatever the Coach asks of us."
Having now completed five seasons at the club, the defender was asked how the club has changed. He argued that "a lot of players, coaches and directors of football have passed through the club... but in reality not a lot has changed, because the feeling of Oviedismo remains the same."
Finally, asked about his aspirations for the season, Christian saw a clear team objective in "starting by beating Lugo". On a personal level, his targets are "the same as in the past five seasons."
