Real Oviedo Vetusta faced Caudal Deportivo today in the first match of 2022. Los Azules suffered a setback to their ambitions for the season, falling to a 1-0 home defeat.
Back at El Requexón for the first match of the second half of the season, Jaime Álvarez opted for a starting eleven made up of Berto Hórreo; Marc Alegre, René Pérez, Lucas Laso, Osky; Joselu, Isaac; David Iglesias, Alex Cardero, Eloy Ordóñez and Pedregal. The visitors, Caudal Deportivo, made the most of two controversial refereeing decisions to deny the Los Azules a point.
The hosts dominated the first half, controlling the play and the possession. Misfortune would strike in the 16th minute when Osky suffered an injury, with Victor Matovu coming on to replace the Asturian full back. The excitement of the first half would arrive in the final minutes. Robert had a clear chance for Caudal, before Pedregal's fine header was denied by the away side's keeper during the very next passage of play.
Los Carbayones remained in control of the play after the interval, while also enjoying a lot more time in the visitors' box. The B team pinned Caudal back in their own half, threatening the opening goal relentlessly. Controversy would hit when the referee refused to give a penalty after Pedregal was brought down in the box. Pablo Menéndez and Iván then came on in the first changes. Caudal would then convert from a debatable penalty to open the scoring. Jaime Álvarez was quick to turn to his bench once more, bringing on Merayo and Mario Fuente. The latter would have the best opportunity of the half, with his effort striking the post.
Vetusta were unable to start the new year with a victory today. Next weekend will see them travel to Gijón to face TSK Roces.
