Sunday morning saw Real Oviedo Vetusta play the penultimate match of the first phase of Grupo I in the Segunda División B, with the side from the capital of Asturias up against Real Valladolid Promesas. Real Oviedo's B team fell to a 1-0 defeat.
Emilio Cañedo opted for a similar starting eleven to the one used last weekend against Sporting B, with Kane Sarr coming in for B. Hórreo in goal in the only change. Today's fixture was a crucial clash for Los Azules' hopes for the season.
The first half saw the Asturians begin the match more strongly than their opponents, but Valladolid would strike first, opening the scoring after five minutes. Despite the setback, Real Oviedo Vetusta did not crumble and began to try to find a way through the home defence. Javi Cueto had a chance from a cross, but his effort struck the crossbar. Meléndez then tried his luck from the edge of the area and forced Samu into a fine save. Real Oviedo Vetusta enjoyed a good spell of possession and territory, and continued to look to find the forwards and force an equaliser. Cueto had another opportunity, before Sandoval had a good chance moments later, but neither managed to convert. The home side had one threatening attack on the brink of halftime.
Real Oviedo Vetusta made no changes during the break, and the second half began in the same way as the first had ended. Real Valladolid Promesas launched some attacks, but Cañedo's team dealt with them without any issues, and Los Carbayones dominated the play. Sandoval had the first chance of the second 45 minutes. The Coach then turned to his bench, bringing Erik Aguado on in place of Alberto Fuentes. Javi Cueto's header was the next attempted equaliser to go close. Gassan, back after injury, and Steven were the next substitutes introduced into the action. Valladolid Promesas then had a good chance, but Kane Sarr made a great save to prevent them doubling the lead. The final stages saw Pedro Inglés and Eloy Ordóñez enter the fray and the B team surge forward in search of a leveller, creating another two opportunities, but they were unable to find the equaliser.
The Real Oviedo B team tried hard, controlled the game, and had the better of the chances today at Los Anexos del José Zorrilla, but the lack of a finishing touch saw them fall to defeat. Emilio Cañedo's side will face Burgos at home next weekend, needing a win and other results to go their way in order to move towards safety in the division.
