We feel very proud of our fans, what happened yesterday proves that even though our supporters are not the most numerous in the world, their identity is unique. We thank them for honouring our club with everything you do.
There are times when football transcends its divides giving way to unique moments. A fine example of one of these could be witnessed at Reino de León Stadium yesterday. Out of the blue, while the game was slowly slipping into injury time, Real Oviedo fans started to sing ‘Santa Bárbara Bendita’, the miners’ anthem. Although the final whistle had not been blown yet, what was happening on the pitch was not so important anymore. The Blue fans away at that midweek fixture were paying tribute to the six miners who had sadly passed away earlier this week in Pola de Gordón (León): a well-deserved homage to all those who have suffered and still suffer the tragic loss of lives in the mine. Coal mining is deeply rooted into the Asturian identity so that song was performed in a really moving style by all those Blue fans.

It was a deafening chant, all those 1,000 away fans were not alone as every radio commentator was silent so the live sound could be genuinely heard. Then, it sounded as if all the listeners had joined in. A tearing tune loaded with wrath. The three points were travelling to Oviedo but that was not the most important thing. That midweek fixture in León will not go down in history for either its outstanding play or its result: that was the evening when the visiting fans accepted the home fans’ pain as their own. A communion born out of sympathy as Asturian people have lived through that kind of tragedy so many times: a real example of true human commiseration.
Real Oviedo’s thoughts are with all the deceased miners’ families while, at the same time, the club will never forget about all those Asturian miners who have tragically perished in the mine shafts. Once again, Real Oviedo supporters have been at the front, as usual.
We feel very proud of our fans, what happened yesterday proves that even though our supporters are not the most numerous in the world, their identity is unique. We thank them for honouring our club with everything you do. The greatness of Real Oviedo owes you, Real Oviedo is a big club thanks to your greatness.
