Real Oviedo travelled to Murcia to face FC Cartagena in Matchday 36 in LaLiga Hypermotion today. The Asturians, who went into the encounter aware of results elsewhere this weekend, arrived with the intention of picking up a victory which would move them back into a playoff place. Having drawn with Mirandés last time out, Luis Carrión made changes, opting for a starting eleven made up of Leo Román, Viti, Oier Luengo, Dani Calvo, Abel Bretones, Colombatto, Homenchenko, Seoane, Sebas Moyano, Paulino and Alemão.

Los Azules emerged strongly for the encounter and Sebas Moyano had the first opportunity. The winger tried his luck from outside the box, but his strike went just wide. Los Carbayones continued to dominate possession, and just five minutes later the best chance of the first half would arrive. A magnificent pass from Colombatto left Alemão through one-on-one with the keeper, but the Brazilian was unable to convert, firing the ball over the bar. The scores remained all-square, while Cartagena began to push forward more as the minutes ticked by. Just when it seemed that the match would reach the interval without any major events, Homenchenko received a second yellow card, meaning that Real Oviedo had to play the entirety of the second half with ten men.

The match changed after the restart, and Cartagena started to get on top. Alarcón fired a warning shot from the edge of the area which forced Leo Román into a fine save to keep the score at 0-0. Real Oviedo looked to withstand the pressure despite the numerical disadvantage, but were unable to do so. Andy capitalised on a rebound following a fine save from Leo Román from an Ortuño header to break the deadlock. Four minutes later Jairo made no mistake after going through one-on-one with Leo Román, extending the hosts' lead to two goals. Real Oviedo threw everything at it as they went in search of a miracle, and Carrión brought on Lucas Ahijado and Álex Millán. Jimmy, Dubasin, and Masca also entered the fray later on, but Cartagena knew how to protect their two-goal lead and secure a key victory in their battle for survival.

Following this defeat, Real Oviedo remain on 55 points and in seventh position. The team will now look to bounce back, with thoughts turning to Sunday's home fixture against CD Tenerife at the Carlos Tartiere.
